River University: Learning and Adventure on the Chattahoochee

That’s why we created River U, an immersive educational program that takes high school students away from the monotony of being stuck behind their desks and into the great outdoors – in this case, on the Chattahoochee River.

This unique program combines the excitement and teambuilding elements of whitewater rafting with hands-on lessons in ecology, river dynamics, and local history. Whether it’s paddling through rapids, examining macroinvertebrates, or uncovering the rich past of Columbus and the Chattahoochee valley, students gain a deeper appreciation for the river that runs through this community.

Rafting & River Ecology

Nothing connects students to nature quite like experiencing it firsthand. Through guided rafting trips, students will see the power of the river up close, learning about its ecosystems while navigating its rapids. We explore the Chattahoochee’s role in shaping Columbus, both environmentally and economically, and discuss how conservation efforts keep the river thriving.

Our macroinvertebrate studies allow students to get their hands dirty (literally) by collecting and sampling tiny aquatic creatures that indicate water quality. By analyzing these organisms, they’ll understand how scientists assess river health and the importance of maintaining a river’s ecosystem.

History Comes to Life

Beyond the water, River U dives into Columbus’ history and the River Restoration Project that sparked new life into the area and transformed it into a top outdoor recreation destination. Students will walk the riverbanks where Native Americans once lived, learn about the impacts of the Civil War on this area, and discover how the urban whitewater course revitalized Columbus.
